An immersive audiovisual installation studying water from the molecular to the interstellar scale, in collaboration with composer Roque Rivas and design studio Certain Measures.
Drawing inspiration from the designs of planetary thinker and architect Buckminster Fuller, Liquid Structure is an immersive audiovisual experience that brings visitors into the kaleidoscopic patterns that underlie our physical reality. The piece takes visitors on a trans-scalar journey through the many states, appearances, and mutations of water: from molecular patterns to crystalline structures, from the diaphanous atmosphere of vapor to deep space where water molecules form.
The piece combines a volumetric 3D sound with intricate projection-mapped visualizations on a custom-fabricated sculpture. Data flows between the audio and the video sculpture, creating a synergetic and visceral experience of the physical world described in patterned motion. Echoing Fuller’s “Geoscope” global monitoring system, this media object is driven by actual data from our perpetually transforming hydrosphere. By making sensible the datasets describing the behavior of water at different scales, the piece builds visual and aural experiences from empirical observations, making data experiential and linking us to the universe across from the molecular to the interplanetary scales.
Fuller’s idea of a unifying trans-scalar geometric system between all things suggests a reorientation of human thinking and action around a synergetic relationship to our world, nature, and each other. In this critical moment in human history, we must all act like Fuller’s “great scientist-artists” to conceive new ways of living in the face of ever-shifting, interrelated systems of climate, media, and data.

Scott was part of the design team for this project from concept to installation; designed and produced projection animations; coordinated video design / production team; collaborated on content and narrative development; lead technical implementation of projection mapping.
